Cheezels are a super popular snack from Australia! They are crunchy, puffy rings that taste strongly of yummy cheddar cheese. Imagine a cheesy, airy ring that melts in your mouth – that's a Cheezel! They are a bit like cheese puffs or Cheetos from other countries.
Cheezels are made from corn and rice. This mix gives them their special light and crispy texture.
Where Cheezels Are Found
Cheezels are mainly sold in countries near Australia, like New Zealand. In Australia, they are made by a company called Snack Brands Australia. In New Zealand, another company called Bluebird Foods makes them. In Malaysia, Cheezels are made by Mondelēz International, which also makes Twisties.
The Story of Cheezels
Cheezels first appeared in 1971. The story goes that the people creating the snack couldn't think of a name. Their boss simply said, "Just call 'em Cheezels!" And the name stuck! Since 2017, Cheezels have also been made to be gluten free, which means more people can enjoy them.
Different Cheezels Flavours
While the original cheese flavour is the most famous, Cheezels come in other exciting tastes too! Here are some of the flavours that have been made:
- Original Cheese
- Pizza
- Smokin' BBQ (which means Barbecue)
- Cheese & Bacon (sometimes called Rashers Cheese & Bacon)
- Hoops & Crosses Burger Flavoured – these are shaped like the 'X's and 'O's from the game tic-tac-toe and taste like a cheeseburger!
- Minis – these are just smaller versions of the classic Cheezels
- Chilli Cheese (for those who like a bit of spice!)
