Clermont Foot 63 is a professional football club from Clermont-Ferrand, France. People often call them Clermont Foot. They play in Ligue 2, which is a top football league in France. The club first started in 1911. The team we know today was formed in 1990 after two clubs joined together.
Clermont Foot plays its home games at the Stade Gabriel-Montpied stadium. This stadium is located right in the city. In 2021, the club made history by reaching Ligue 1 for the very first time. This is the highest level of football in France! They returned to Ligue 2 in 2024.
Club History
The club began in 1911 as Stade Clermontois. In their early years, they didn't win many league titles. But they did reach the semi-finals of the Coupe de France in the 1945–46 season. This is a big knockout cup competition in France.
After the 1946–47 season, the club faced money problems. They lost their "professional" status, meaning they couldn't pay players as much. They became professional again in 1966. In 1984, Stade-Clermontois joined with another club, AS Montferrand. They formed Clermont-Ferrand Football Club (CFC) and played in the third division.
Later, the club changed its name to Clermont Foot Auvergne. They had to start playing in a lower league called Division Honneur. But they worked hard and got promoted many times. By 1993, they reached Ligue 2. During these years, they also had some great runs in the Coupe de France. In 1997, they beat three professional teams, including Paris Saint-Germain. This was a huge achievement for them!
Clermont Foot won the Championnat National (another French league) twice. They won it in 2001–02 and again in 2006–07. This helped them get promoted back to Ligue 2.
In 2014, Clermont Foot made headlines. They became the first French men's professional team to hire a female manager. Her name was Helena Costa. She left after a short time, and another woman, Corinne Diacre, took over. Corinne Diacre later went on to coach the French women's national team.
The club made history again in 2021. They finished second in the 2020–21 Ligue 2 season. This meant they were promoted to Ligue 1 for the first time ever! They played in Ligue 1 for three years. After the 2023–24 season, they were relegated back to Ligue 2.
