Cloghernagh is a mountain in Ireland. Its name, Clocharnach, means "stoney place" in Irish. This mountain stands at 800 meters (about 2,625 feet) tall.
Even though Cloghernagh is quite high, it doesn't have enough "prominence" to be called an Arderin. Prominence means how much a mountain sticks up from the land around it. But it is still the 40th highest peak on the Vandeleur-Lynam list, which is another way to rank mountains.
Cloghernagh is located in the southern part of the Wicklow Mountains. It's part of a very large group of mountains called a massif. This massif includes Lugnaquilla, which is Wicklow's tallest mountain at 925 meters (about 3,035 feet).
Mountain Features
The northern side of Cloghernagh has steep walls and cliffs. These form the beautiful, U-shaped valley known as Fraughan Rock Glen. This glen then drops down into the Glenmalure valley.
Arts Lough: A High Lake
High up on Cloghernagh's northeastern side, you'll find a pretty lake called Arts Lough. This lake is 511 meters (about 1,677 feet) above sea level. It sits in a bowl-shaped hollow called a corrie.
Horseshoe Shapes
Cloghernagh, along with Lugnaquilla and Benleagh (689 meters or 2,260 feet), forms a "horseshoe" shape around the Fraughan Rock Glen. This means the mountains curve around the valley like a horseshoe.
It also forms another horseshoe shape. This one is around the glen of the Carrawaystick River. For this horseshoe, Cloghernagh teams up with Corrigasleggaun (794 meters or 2,605 feet) and the corrie lake called Kelly's Lough.
