The main county highways follow a special pattern, like a grid.

  • Roads that go east and west have numbers that start with "4" and end with an even number (like 438, 442). The further north a road is, the smaller its number. The further south it is, the higher its number.
  • Roads that go north and south have numbers that start with "10" and end with an odd number (like 1023, 1029). The further west a road is, the smaller its number. The further east it is, the higher its number.

There are also smaller county roads with one or two digits. These roads usually cover a short distance or lead to a state park.

None of these county highways go into Lawrence, which is the main city in Douglas County.

The fastest you can drive on any county highway in Douglas County is 55 miles per hour (about 88 kilometers per hour).
