Crown Lands is a Canadian rock music duo from Oshawa, Ontario. This band is made up of two talented musicians: Cody Bowles, who sings and plays drums, and Kevin Comeau, who plays guitar, bass, and keyboards.
Cody Bowles is Mik'maq and Two-Spirit, and Kevin Comeau is Jewish. Their music is inspired by prog rock and often tells stories about Indigenous people standing up against colonialism (when one country takes control of another land). The band's name, "Crown Lands," shows their desire to challenge the idea of "crown land" in Canada, which refers to government-owned lands that were originally taken from First Nations communities.
Crown Lands won the Juno Award for Breakthrough Group of the Year at the Juno Awards of 2021. They were also nominated for Rock Album of the Year.

Band History
How Crown Lands Started
The band Crown Lands began in 2015. Kevin Comeau and Cody Bowles met and started playing music together in a friend's barn. Kevin studied classical music at Western University. Cody studied psychology and music at York University.
Early Music Releases
Their first collection of songs, called an EP (Extended Play), was Mantra. It came out on August 18, 2016. They released their second EP, Rise Over Run, on September 8, 2017. This EP included their song "Mountain," which talks about colonialism and the history of residential schools in Canada.
In 2018, Crown Lands had the exciting chance to open for the famous musician Jack White during his tour in Canada.
First Full Album and Special Songs
On June 11, 2020, they released an acoustic EP called Wayward Flyers, Vol. 1. This EP was released through Universal and featured their version of Neil Young's song "Birds."
Their first full-length album, also called Crown Lands, was released on August 13, 2020. It was produced by Dave Cobb in Nashville. Before the album came out, they released the song "End of the Road." This song is a protest song that highlights the challenges faced by Indigenous women. The song's video features narration by Tanya Tagaq.
Tributes and New Music
In March 2021, Crown Lands released "Context: Fearless Pt. 1." This song is a tribute to the legendary band Rush. It's a long song with parts that remind listeners of Rush's music. They even worked with producers who had previously worked with Rush, like Terry Brown, Nick Raskulinecz, and David Bottrill.
In July 2021, the band released two new songs, "White Buffalo" and "The Oracle." Both were produced by David Bottrill. These songs were part of their four-track EP, White Buffalo, which came out on September 16, 2021. The band considers "White Buffalo" to be the third song in a series about Indigenous resistance, following "Mountain" and "End of the Road."
In late 2022, Crown Lands joined the Michigan rock band Greta Van Fleet as an opening act for their U.S. Tour.
