Daniel "Danny" Nii Tackie Mensah Welbeck (born 26 November 1990) is an English professional footballer. He plays as a forward for Brighton & Hove Albion. He is known for his great teamwork and his skill as a "false nine" (a forward who drops deeper to help create attacks).

Danny Welbeck grew up playing in the youth teams at Manchester United. He made his first team debut in 2008 and even scored a goal! He won the League Cup and the 2008 FIFA Club World Cup with United. Later, he played on loan for Preston North End and Sunderland. From 2011, he became a regular player for Manchester United.

In September 2014, Welbeck moved to Arsenal. After leaving Arsenal, he joined Watford in August 2019. A year later, he moved to Brighton & Hove Albion.

Welbeck also played for the England national team. He first played for England in March 2011. He scored his first goal for England in June 2012. He has played for England in big tournaments like UEFA Euro 2012 and the 2014 FIFA World Cup and 2018 FIFA World Cup. He has played for his country 42 times.

Early Life and Football Start

Danny Welbeck was born on 26 November 1990 in Manchester, England. His parents are from Ghana. He grew up in the Longsight area of Manchester.

Joining Manchester United

Manchester United first noticed Welbeck when he was just six years old. At eight, he played for a local team called Fletcher Moss Rangers. He then joined Manchester United's youth academy.

He started playing for the club's under-18 team in 2006. Even though he was younger than some players, he helped the team reach the FA Youth Cup final. He made great progress despite having Osgood–Schlatter disease and pneumonia.

First Team Debut

In July 2007, Welbeck signed his first trainee contract. He quickly moved up to the reserve team. In January 2008, he joined the first team for a trip to Saudi Arabia. He made his first appearance for the senior team in a friendly match on 21 January 2008.

His official debut for Manchester United was on 23 September 2008. He started in a League Cup match against Middlesbrough. On 15 November 2008, he made his Premier League debut against Stoke City. He scored a fantastic goal from 30 yards out! He also played in the 2009 Football League Cup Final, which United won.

In September 2009, Welbeck scored his first goal of the 2009–10 season in the League Cup. He also played in the UEFA Champions League for the first time. He signed a new contract with Manchester United that kept him at the club until 2013.

Loan Spells

In January 2010, Welbeck joined Preston North End on loan. However, he got a knee injury that needed surgery, so his loan ended early.

In August 2010, he went on loan to Sunderland for the 2010–11 season. He scored his first Sunderland goal in November against Chelsea. He scored twice more against Everton and helped Sunderland win other matches. His good form made many people think he should play for England. He got another injury in January 2011 and returned to Manchester United for treatment.

Becoming a Regular at Manchester United

Welbeck started the 2011–12 season strongly for Manchester United. He scored the first goal in a 3–0 win against Tottenham Hotspur. He also scored in a huge 8–2 win over Arsenal.

He scored two goals in a Champions League match against Basel in September. He continued to score important goals, including one against Manchester City in the FA Cup and a winning goal against Arsenal. His great playing earned him a nomination for the 2012 PFA Young Player of the Year Award.

In August 2012, Welbeck signed a new four-year contract with Manchester United. He scored a very important goal against Real Madrid in the Champions League in February 2013. This made him the first English player to score for a Premier League team at Real Madrid's stadium since 2001. He finished the season with two goals in 40 games.

In the 2013–14 season, Welbeck scored two goals in the first league match against Swansea City. Between December 2013 and January 2014, he scored six goals in six Premier League matches. He scored twice against Aston Villa and also scored against West Ham United, Norwich City, Tottenham Hotspur, and Swansea City. By the end of the season, Welbeck wanted to play as a main striker.

Moving to Arsenal

On 2 September 2014, Welbeck joined Arsenal for £16 million. He had played 142 games and scored 29 goals for Manchester United.

He made his Arsenal debut on 13 September against Manchester City. On 1 October, he scored his first ever hat-trick (three goals in one game) in the Champions League against Galatasaray.

In March 2015, Welbeck scored the winning goal against his old team, Manchester United, in the FA Cup quarter-finals. Arsenal went on to win the FA Cup that year, but Welbeck missed the final due to injury.

Injuries and Comebacks

Welbeck missed much of his second season at Arsenal because of a knee injury. He finally returned on 14 February 2016 against Leicester City. He scored a winning goal in injury time with a header! He then scored in his first Premier League start back, against Manchester United.

He got another knee injury in May 2016, which meant he missed the UEFA Euro 2016 tournament. He was out of action for nine months.

After eight months, Welbeck returned to play for Arsenal in January 2017. He scored two goals in an FA Cup match against Southampton. He also started when Arsenal beat Chelsea 2–1 in the 2017 FA Cup Final.

In the 2017–18 season, Welbeck scored his first goal against Leicester City. He scored two more goals against AFC Bournemouth. He also scored two goals against Southampton to help Arsenal win 3–2.

In November 2018, Welbeck suffered a broken ankle during a Europa League match. This injury sadly ended his time at Arsenal. He left the club at the end of the season.

Time at Watford

Welbeck joined Watford on 7 August 2019. He made his debut as a substitute against Everton. He scored his first goal for Watford in an EFL Cup game against Swansea City. He left Watford in October 2020.

Playing for Brighton & Hove Albion

Welbeck signed for Brighton & Hove Albion on 18 October 2020. He made his debut two weeks later. On 21 November 2020, he scored his first goal for Brighton against Aston Villa. He also scored his first home goal for Brighton in December.

In April 2021, he scored against his former club, Manchester United, at Old Trafford. In May, he played in Brighton's 3–2 win over champions Manchester City.

On 23 June 2021, Welbeck signed a new contract with Brighton. He scored his first goal of the 2021–22 season in September against Leicester City. He had surgery on a hamstring injury in October but returned before the end of the year. In December, he scored a late goal against Chelsea at Stamford Bridge, which was Brighton's first ever goal at that stadium.

In Brighton's last game of the 2021–22 season, he helped them beat West Ham United 3–1. This helped Brighton finish ninth in the league, their highest ever position!

In the first game of the 2022–23 season, Welbeck helped Brighton win at Old Trafford for the first time ever against Manchester United. He then signed a new two-year contract. He scored his first goal of the season in November against Arsenal in the EFL Cup. In January 2023, he scored his first league goal of the season against Liverpool. On 29 April, he scored two goals and made an assist in Brighton's biggest Premier League win, a 6–0 victory over Wolverhampton Wanderers.

On 16 September 2023, Welbeck scored his first goal of the 2023–24 season in a 3–1 win at Old Trafford. He played 29 league games and scored 5 goals that season.

On 14 March 2024, Welbeck scored the only goal in Brighton's 1–0 win against AS Roma in the UEFA Europa League. In the summer of 2024, he extended his contract with Brighton until the end of the 2025–26 season.

International Career for England

Youth Teams

Welbeck first played for the England under-16s when he was 14 years old in October 2005. He then moved up to the England under-17 team. He helped them reach the final of the 2007 UEFA European Under-17 Championship and the quarter-finals of the 2007 FIFA U-17 World Cup.

He later played for the England under-19s and the England under-21s. He scored his first two goals for the under-21 team in September 2010. In 2011, he scored an important goal for the under-21s in the 2011 UEFA European Under-21 Championship against Spain.

Danny Welbeck was called up to the England senior squad in March 2011. He made his debut in a friendly match against Ghana.

On 29 May 2012, Welbeck was chosen for England's squad for UEFA Euro 2012. On 2 June 2012, he scored his first goal for England in a 1–0 win against Belgium. During Euro 2012, he scored a winning goal with his heel against Sweden.

Welbeck scored four goals during England's qualification for the 2014 FIFA World Cup. He scored two goals in a 5–0 win against San Marino and two more in a 4–0 win against Moldova. He played in the World Cup tournament itself.

In September 2014, Welbeck scored both goals in England's 2–0 win against Switzerland in a Euro 2016 qualifier. He went on to be England's top goalscorer in the qualifying stage with six goals.

He was also part of the England squad for the 2018 FIFA World Cup. He played in one match during the tournament, against Belgium.

Danny Welbeck is known for being strong, fast, and good at heading the ball. Because of his height and how he runs, some people have compared him to former Arsenal striker Emmanuel Adebayor. However, Welbeck himself looked up to another former Arsenal forward, Thierry Henry.

Coaches and fans praise Welbeck for his hard work and how well he follows team plans. He is also known for playing well in big matches. Former England manager Roy Hodgson liked Welbeck's ability to help in attack, press the midfield, and hold up the ball for his teammates.
