Dari (Fārsī-ye Darī) is a special way of speaking the Persian language. It is the type of Persian spoken in Afghanistan. Dari is one of the two official languages in Afghanistan. This means it is widely used by the government and in most media like TV and newspapers.
Most people who speak Dari are from the Tajik group. Other smaller groups also use it. People in Afghanistan and Iran who speak Persian can usually understand each other. The name Dari has been used for this language for a very long time.

Where Dari is Spoken
Dari is mainly spoken in Afghanistan. It is the primary language for over 27% of the people there. More than half of Afghanistan's population understands Dari. You can also find smaller groups of Dari speakers in parts of Pakistan and Iran. About 2.5 million people in these countries speak or understand Dari.

Historically, Dari was once the official language used in the courts of the Sassanid Empire. This was a powerful empire that existed many centuries ago. This shows that Dari has a long and important history.
