Darrel Joseph Mitchell Jr. (born May 3, 1984) is a former professional basketball player from the United States. He played as a point guard or shooting guard. Darrel Mitchell is known for his time playing college basketball with the LSU Tigers. He helped them reach the NCAA Tournament Final Four in 2006. After college, he played for many professional teams in different countries across Europe.

High School Basketball Star

Darrel Mitchell was born in New Iberia, Louisiana. He went to St. Martinville Senior High School in St. Martinville. His dad, Darrel Sr., was the head coach of the basketball team there.

As a sophomore, Darrel was a top player. He scored 22.2 points per game. In his junior year, he averaged 21 points and 5 assists. He was named the Class 4A MVP. His team, the St. Martinville Tigers, had a great record of 32 wins and 3 losses. They made it to the state tournament quarterfinals.

Even though he was 5 feet 11 inches tall, which is not very tall for a shooting guard, he played that position well. In 2001, he was invited to the ABCD Camp. This camp brings together the best high school players in the US.

In his final year, Darrel averaged 24.6 points per game. He shot 41% from the three-point line. He once scored 41 points against Lincoln High School from Dallas, Texas. This game was special because Lincoln was ranked the best high school team. It had future NBA star Chris Bosh. Darrel's team won the state 4A championship that year. They finished with an amazing 36 wins and 4 losses.

At the end of his senior year, Darrel received many honors. He was named the 2002 Louisiana Mr. Basketball. He also won the Gatorade Player of the Year award for Louisiana. During his high school career, Darrel scored over 2,000 points. He was also a good student, keeping a 3.0 GPA. In 2007, his high school honored him by retiring his jersey number, 22.

College Journey at LSU

Many top college teams wanted Darrel Mitchell to play for them. These included Arkansas, Houston, and LSU. In April 2002, he decided to join LSU.

Freshman Year

As a freshman, Darrel played an important role off the bench. He played in all 32 games. He averaged almost 20 minutes per game. In one game, he scored 19 points by making all 5 of his three-point shots. He was the best three-point shooter on the team. He made 42.4% of his three-pointers.

Sophomore Year

In his second year, Darrel played more often. He started 17 out of 29 games. He scored double figures in 9 of his last 12 games. He scored a career-high 22 points against Tennessee. He also made 6 three-pointers in that game. He was still the team's best three-point shooter. He averaged 11.9 points per game.

Junior Year

Darrel became a full-time starter in his junior year. He started all 30 games for LSU. He set a new career high by scoring 32 points against Ohio State. He was named Player of the Week soon after. He ended the season averaging 13.1 points per game. He also improved his assists, averaging 2.9 per game. He was one of the best free throw shooters in his conference.

Senior Year and Final Four

His senior year was very exciting. He was part of the 2005–06 LSU team. This team had many talented players from Louisiana. Darrel scored his 1,000th career point in November 2005. He also hit a game-winning shot against West Virginia.

LSU made it to the 2006 NCAA tournament. Darrel played great in the tournament. He scored 19 points in the first game. He then scored 16 points and made a game-winning three-pointer against Texas A&M. LSU kept winning, beating strong teams like Duke and Texas. They reached the Final Four! They eventually lost to UCLA.

Darrel averaged 16.8 points per game in his senior year. This was the second-highest on his team. He played a lot of minutes, setting a record for LSU. When he finished college, he was 10th all-time in points scored at LSU. He also became LSU's all-time leader in three-point field goals with 258.

Professional Career

After college, Darrel Mitchell was eligible for the 2006 NBA draft. However, he was not chosen by any NBA team. So, he started his professional career in Europe.

His first team was Galatasaray in Turkey. He played well there, averaging 13.8 points per game. He was even named to the Turkish League Foreign All-Stars team in 2007.

In 2007, he joined Lietuvos rytas in Lithuania. With this team, he got to play in the Euroleague. This is one of the highest levels of basketball in Europe. After that, he played for Élan Chalon in France.

Darrel then played for AEL Limassol in Cyprus in 2008. He averaged 10.7 points and 3.7 assists per game. The next season, he moved to Khimik in Ukraine. He had a great season there, averaging 17.7 points and 5.4 assists. He also shot 42.4% from three-point range.

He later played for B.C. Oostende in Belgium for two seasons. He returned to Khimik in Ukraine in 2011. He played another full season, averaging 17.1 points and 6 assists. He then joined another Ukrainian team, Politekhnika-Halychyna.

In 2014, Darrel had a short time with BC Pieno žvaigždės in Lithuania. He then went back to France. He played for Élan Béarnais Pau-Orthez and then AS Monaco. With AS Monaco, he helped the team get promoted to the top French league.

From 2016 to 2018, Darrel played for Oettinger Rockets in Germany. He played in both the second and first divisions of German basketball. His last professional team was Spartak Primorye in Russia in 2018. He helped them win the Russian 2nd Division league title.
