David Bustamante's Early Life and Career
Starting with Operación Triunfo
David Bustamante was one of the exciting new pop singers who became popular in Spain in the early 2000s. His big break came in 2001 when he joined the TV show Operación Triunfo. This show was incredibly popular and sold many CDs. David was a teenager when he became one of the top three finalists in this contest. After the show, he signed with Vale Music Spain and Universal Music Latino.
First Album: Bustamante
His first album, called Bustamante, came out in Spain in May 2002. It was released in Latin America and the United States in 2003. This album sold very well, thanks to popular songs like "Además de ti" and "Dos hombres y un destino". Another special song on the album was "Perdóname", which was a duet with the Puerto Rican pop star Luis Fonsi. After releasing the album, David went on a successful tour, performing over 70 concerts across Spain.
New Albums: Así soy yo and Caricias al alma
In 2004, David released his second album, Así soy yo (which means "That's the way I am"). This album was mostly produced by the famous Emilio Estefan in Miami. Also in 2004, David sang the theme song for "Gitanas", a popular Latin soap opera filmed in Mexico.
David continued his success with the album Caricias al alma (meaning "Caresses to the Soul") in 2005. This album was also a big hit in Spain and other Latin American countries like Venezuela, where it earned a Gold award. Caricias al alma was recorded in Italy and Spain and included the summer hit "Devuélveme la vida". He also traveled to Latin America to share his music.
More Success: Pentimento to A Contracorriente
David Bustamante's success kept growing with albums like Pentimento (2006), Al Filo de la Irrealidad (2008), and A Contracorriente (2010). All these albums reached the top of the Spanish Album chart and earned Platinum awards. With these albums, David shared his music across Spain, Latin America, and some European countries. He had popular songs like "Cobarde" and "A contracorriente". During these years, he went on many tours in different seasons.
Mio and Vivir Albums
In 2011, David released Mio, which was produced by Christian Leuzzi (who also worked with Celine Dion). This album also reached Platinum status, helping David's total sales get close to two million. Mio includes a duet with the Spanish singer Pastora Soler. In 2012 and 2013, David toured Spain and was a coach on the Spanish talent show El Número Uno.
David released his album Vivir (meaning "To Live") in 2014. The first song from this album was the hit "Feliz". During the Christmas holidays, he hosted a TV show called Fuera de clase on La 1, a main Spanish TV channel. The channel also showed a special music TV show about his career on Christmas Eve.
Amor de los dos and Héroes en tiempos de guerra
Amor de los dos (meaning "Love of the Two") is David Bustamante's ninth album. It was released in June 2016 by Universal Music. This album reached number one in Spain and features other singers like Alejandro Fernández and Edith Márquez. He also sang a duet with the Mexican singer Anahí for her album Inesperado (2016).
In January 2019, David released his new song, Héroes. In February 2019, his tenth album, Héroes en tiempos de guerra (meaning "Heroes in Times of War"), came out. This album also featured other singers, including Ana Guerra.
David also works as an advisor for Luis Fonsi on the TV show La Voz (Antena 3). Besides music, he has created ten different perfumes with the company Puig.
David Bustamante's Music Style
David Bustamante's music is mainly Latin pop. He often sings romantic pop ballads, which are one of his strengths. While he is not a flamenco artist, he sometimes adds parts of Spanish flamenco and gypsy music to his songs. He also includes influences from Latin American music, like Afro-Cuban salsa and Colombian cumbia.
Some people compare David Bustamante to artists like Ricky Martin or Marc Anthony. However, David has his own special style and sings with a clear Spanish accent. This means anyone who speaks Spanish can tell he is from Spain, not Latin America. He has also been compared to other singers like Enrique Iglesias, Luis Fonsi, or Cristian Castro. When he performs, David uses only his last name, Bustamante.
David Bustamante's Personal Life
On July 22, 2006, David Bustamante married the Spanish actress and model, Paula Echevarría. Their wedding took place in the Basílica de Santa María la Real de Covadonga in Asturias. On August 17, 2008, their daughter was born. David and Paula divorced in March 2018.
