Deltaform Mountain is a tall mountain found in the beautiful Valley of the Ten Peaks. It sits right on the Continental Divide, which is like a big natural line that separates rivers flowing to different oceans. This means it's on the border between the Canadian provinces of British Columbia and Alberta. It also marks the edge between two amazing places: Banff National Park and Kootenay National Park.

A long time ago, a mountaineer named Samuel Allen first called it Saknowa. But in 1897, Walter Wilcox gave it the name Deltaform Mountain. He thought the mountain looked like the Greek letter delta.

The first time anyone successfully climbed Deltaform Mountain was in 1903. A group of climbers, August Eggers and Herschel Clifford Parker, made the climb. They were helped by experienced mountain guides named Christian and Hans Kaufmann.

Deltaform Mountain is a popular spot for experienced climbers. There are a couple of main ways to climb it:

  • The North-West Ridge is often called the "Normal Route." It's a challenging climb.
  • The North Face, known as "The Supercouloir," is another difficult route.

How Deltaform Mountain Was Formed

Deltaform Mountain is made of sedimentary rock. This type of rock forms from layers of sand, mud, and tiny bits of sea creatures that settle at the bottom of ancient seas. Over millions of years, these layers get squished and hardened into rock.

The rocks that make up Deltaform Mountain were formed during the Precambrian and Jurassic periods. These are very old times in Earth's history. Later, during a period called the Laramide orogeny, huge forces pushed these rock layers up and over younger rocks. This process created the big mountains we see today, including Deltaform Mountain.

Weather at Deltaform Mountain

The weather around Deltaform Mountain is known as a subarctic climate. This means it has very cold winters with lots of snow. The summers are usually mild, not too hot.

During winter, temperatures can drop below -20 degrees Celsius (-4 degrees Fahrenheit). When you add in the wind, it can feel even colder, sometimes below -30 degrees Celsius (-22 degrees Fahrenheit). So, it's a very chilly place in the colder months!
