Around the 1400s, a family from Lucerne had some control over the village's local laws. They gave this control to Lucerne in 1422. After 1415, Dietwil became part of the city of Lucerne's area. In 1798, Dietwil's connection to Lucerne ended. In 1803, it became part of the new Canton of Aargau.
The local Catholic church, dedicated to St. James the Elder, was first built in 1145. It was replaced in 1780 by the church you see today. For many years, a group called the Knights of Malta had special rights over the church.
