Oberrüti was first mentioned in old records in 1236, but back then it was just called Ruty. The name Oberrüti came into use much later, in 1803, when the Canton of Aargau was created.

For a long time, Oberrüti was part of the lands controlled by the Habsburgs, a powerful European family. After 1415, it became part of Lucerne. From 1425 to 1798, it was part of an area called the Freie Ämter. These lands were governed by some or all of the Confederates, which were like a group of states that formed early Switzerland.

The local lords, the Lords of Hünenberg, owned the rights to the village. They also built the village church of St. Ruprecht, which was first mentioned in 1275. Later, in 1448, the rights to the village were given to Kappel Abbey. From 1498 to 1798, the city of Zug managed the village government and the church. When the Canton of Aargau was formed in 1803, Oberrüti became part of it.

There used to be a ferry across the Reuss river near Oberrüti. This ferry was important for travel and trade. It operated from 1413 until 1884.
