Namesake | John Eardley-Wilmot |
The Division of Wilmot was a special area in Tasmania that elected a person to the Australian House of Representatives. This is like a team in a parliament that helps make laws for Australia. The Wilmot area was in the middle of Tasmania. Over time, it included towns like Deloraine, Beaconsfield, Devonport, Latrobe, and New Norfolk.
The name "Wilmot" came from Sir John Eardley-Wilmot, who was the sixth leader (called a Lieutenant-Governor) of Tasmania. This special area was created for an election in 1903. It stopped being an election area in 1984. Now, much of the land that was once Wilmot is part of another election area called the Division of Lyons.

The Prime Minister is the main leader of the country. Joseph Lyons passed away while he was still the Prime Minister. Because of this, a special election (called a by-election) was held for the Wilmot area in 1939 to choose a new representative.
