Dmytro Borysovych Tymchuk (Ukrainian: Дмитро́ Бори́сович Тимчу́к; June 27, 1972 – June 19, 2019) was an important figure in Ukraine. He was a member of parliament, a military expert, and a popular blogger. He also served as an officer in the Ukrainian military reserve, holding the rank of Lieutenant Colonel. Tymchuk was one of the main people behind the Information Resistance blog. During a time of unrest in Ukraine in 2014, he became very well-known online. Many people looked to his updates for information about what was happening in the country.
In 2014, Tymchuk was elected to the Ukrainian parliament as part of the People's Front party.
Early Life and Education
Dmytro Tymchuk was born on June 27, 1972. His birthplace was Chita, which was then part of the Soviet Union. From 1978 to 1983, he lived in East Germany because his father was serving in the Soviet Army there. After that, his family moved to Berdychiv in Ukraine. Both Russia and Ukraine were part of the Soviet Union until Ukraine became independent in 1991.
In 1995, Tymchuk finished his studies at the Faculty of Journalism. He graduated from the Lviv Higher Military-Political School. This school was a predecessor to the modern Hetman Petro Sahaidachnyi National Ground Forces Academy.
Career and Public Role
Dmytro Tymchuk served in the Ukrainian army from 1995 to 1997. After that, he worked at the headquarters of the National Guard of Ukraine until 2000. From 2000 to 2012, he held various roles within the Ministry of Defense of Ukraine. He also served in international missions in places like Iraq, Kosovo, and Lebanon. His highest military rank was lieutenant colonel.
In 2008, Tymchuk became the chief editor of an online publication called Fleet-2017. He also became the head of a NGO called the Center for Military-Political Studies. He was one of the main people who organized the Information Resistance news website. This website shared important updates and news.
During the 2014 pro-Russian unrest in Ukraine and the war in Donbas, Tymchuk became one of the most popular online activists in Ukraine. Many news outlets and people relied on his information about the situation in the country. By November 2014, more than 190,000 people were following his Facebook page.
Tymchuk helped create a new political party called the People's Front. This happened on September 10, 2014, shortly before the 2014 Ukrainian parliamentary election. He was then elected to the Verkhovna Rada, which is Ukraine's parliament.
Death
Dmytro Tymchuk passed away on June 19, 2019, at his home.
