Doddinghurst is a small village and civil parish located in the Borough of Brentwood, in the southern part of Essex, England. It's about 3 miles (5 km) north of the town of Brentwood.

History of Doddinghurst

Doddinghurst has a long history! The village was first written about in the Domesday Book. This was a huge survey of England ordered by William the Conqueror in 1086. Back then, it was called "Doddenhenc." This old Anglo-Saxon name means "the wood of Dudda or of his people." The name we use today, Doddinghurst, became common by the 1200s.

The village's church, called All Saints Church, is a very old and beautiful building. It has parts that date back to the 1200s, like its main area (nave) and a south doorway. Over the years, new parts were added or improved, especially in the 1400s and 1600s. A big restoration happened in 1886, which included rebuilding the chancel (the area around the altar). The church's marriage records go back a very long time!

Doddinghurst Today

Doddinghurst is built around two main roads. These are Doddinghurst Road, which comes from Brentwood, and Church Lane. Church Lane is part of a bigger road that circles through nearby villages like Kelvedon Hatch, Hook End, and Wyatts Green. These two main roads meet at the north end of the village.

Village Facilities

Doddinghurst has many useful places for its residents.

  • There are two schools that work closely together: Doddinghurst Infant School and Doddinghurst CofE Junior School.
  • You'll find the historic All Saints Church, which is over 700 years old.
  • For food, there's the Kervan Kitchen restaurant.
  • The village also has a village hall, which is a community hub.
  • Young people can join the 1st Doddinghurst Scout Troop, which has its own hut behind the playing fields.

Shops and Services

Near the village hall and church, at the north end of Doddinghurst, there's a small group of shops. These include a newsagent (where you can buy newspapers and magazines), a barber (for haircuts), a beauty salon, a pharmacy (for medicines), and an off-licence (where you can buy drinks). On Church Lane, you'll find an estate agent and another barbers, plus a fish and chips shop. A bit further away, towards the middle of the village, there's a Post Office.

Community Life and Green Spaces

The Village Hall is a central spot, located across from All Saints Church. The Doddinghurst Parish Council has its offices and meeting rooms here. The Parish Council is important because it owns and manages many of the village's main facilities. This includes children's play areas and open spaces like Peartree Field.

Besides recreational areas, the Parish Council also looks after the Burial Ground behind All Saints Church. They also manage Garden Allotments, where people can grow their own plants, off Mountnessing Lane. Behind the Village Hall, there are large playing fields. These fields are used for village events every two years to help local charities. They also host fun days organized and paid for by the Parish Council. The local Football Club uses these playing fields regularly.

Doddinghurst also has a modern Doctors' surgery near Deal Tree Corner. It has several doctors and nurses who help people from Doddinghurst and nearby villages. The village is surrounded by beautiful countryside with farms, fields, and small forests. Many public footpaths connect these areas, perfect for walks. The River Wid flows through the village, along with some smaller streams that join it.

Most of the village buildings were built or updated after 1950. However, Doddinghurst still feels like a rural community. A lot of the land around it is used for growing crops.

In 2007, the Doddinghurst Parish Council received "Quality Status." This was part of a government plan to improve how local communities and their councils work together. In 2009, the Parish Council gained the "Power of Well-Being." This means they can spend money on things that benefit the community's social life, economy, or environment.

Besides the playing field behind the Village Hall, there are other big areas for fun and sports. These include the Peartree Recreational Field, which is across from the Post Office. The junior school also has a large field and a woodland area attached to it.
