Drygarn Fawr is a cool mountain located in Powys, Wales. It's one of the tallest mountains in Mid Wales, reaching up to 645 metres (about 2,114 feet) above sea level! It sits south of the Elan Valley Reservoirs. This mountain is part of the wild, open Cambrian Mountains area. At the very top, you'll see two big piles of stones called cairns, which are super easy to spot. Drygarn Fawr has a gentle, grassy shape, with just a few rocks near the top. Some other nearby peaks include Gorllwyn, Y Gamriw, and Drum yr Eira, which are all over 600 metres tall.

Exploring Drygarn Fawr

Want to hike up Drygarn Fawr? There are a couple of ways to reach the top, and both offer amazing views!

Paths to the Summit

  • One path starts from a place called Llannerch Yrfa. This path is a bridleway, which means it's a route where people can walk, ride horses, or cycle. It winds its way through forests in the Nant y Fedw valley. After the forest, it goes around the southern side of the mountain.
  • Another way to start your hike is from Rhiwnant. This spot is right on the edge of the Caban Coch reservoir, which is one of the Elan Valley Reservoirs. From here, you follow a stream called Nant Paradwys. Then, you turn west and head towards the big stone piles (cairns) at the summit.

What to Expect on the Trail

Both of these routes take you across wild moorland and peat bog areas. These places can be very wet and squishy, especially after it rains a lot. Sometimes, the path might be hard to see or even impassable because of the wet ground. So, it's always a good idea to be prepared and wear waterproof boots!
