In 1956, two brothers, Jack and Harold Berkowitz, owned a diner. They bought a restaurant in Bridgeport, Connecticut. This restaurant sold hot dogs and hamburgers.
The brothers needed a name for their new business. They chose "Duchess" after Dutchess County, New York. They simply left out the "T" from the county's name. After this, the Duchess fast food chain began to grow.
