The Story of Duchess

In 1956, two brothers-in-law, Jack and Harold Berkowitz, owned a diner. They bought another restaurant in Bridgeport, Connecticut, that sold hot dogs and hamburgers. When they needed to name their new place for official papers, they thought of Dutchess County, New York. They decided to name their restaurant "Duchess," but without the "T."

After getting its new name, the Duchess fast-food chain started to grow. By 2018, Duchess had opened 14 locations. All of these restaurants are in the Fairfield and New Haven counties of Connecticut.
