Dundee was started in 1879. This happened when the St. Paul and Sioux City Railway Company built a new train line. The first train station outside of Heron Lake was planned for this area. It was first called Warren. This name honored Joseph Warren, a hero from the Battle of Bunker Hill.

How Dundee Got its Name

The town was officially mapped out in July 1879. A train depot began construction on August 13. Mr. G. Foils became the first stationmaster on September 1. He also became the postmaster when a post office opened on November 1, 1879. At this time, the town's name changed to Dundee. It was named after the city of Dundee, Scotland.

The exact reason for the name change isn't fully known. However, Mr. Foils made the change. A Scottish company, the Dundee Improvement Company, was building things in nearby Kinbrae. Perhaps Mr. Foils hoped to attract similar investments to Dundee.

Early Growth and Becoming a Village

The first business in Dundee opened in the spring of 1880. It was started by F. D. Lindquist and H. A. Scherlie. Several homes were also built that year. But Dundee didn't really grow much until the late 1890s. This was after the country recovered from some tough economic times.

By December 23, 1897, Dundee had 187 people. The citizens asked to become an official village. On January 4, 1898, the county agreed. A special election was held on February 15. The first Dundee council meeting happened on March 11, 1898. F. D. Lindquist was chosen as the first village president.
