A Look at Dunthorpe's History
How Dunthorpe Began
In January 1916, a company called Ladd Estate Company bought a large piece of land, about 215 acres, to create Dunthorpe. They had very specific rules for how the new community would be built and who could live there.
Early Rules for the Community
The rules stated that only homes could be built, with some small buildings for animals. Certain animals like pigs and goats were not allowed. There was also a minimum cost for building a house, which was $3,000 at the time. The sale of alcoholic drinks was also not allowed in the area.

About 6 acres of the property are stunning English-style gardens. The gardens are famous for their many types of magnolia trees. You can also find lots of other native and exotic plants there.
Learning in Dunthorpe: Schools
Riverdale School District
Dunthorpe is part of the Riverdale School District. This district has been important to the community for a long time, especially with Riverdale Grade School.
Changes in Local Education
In the early 1990s, the state of Oregon decided that all school districts should have both elementary and high schools. Smaller districts like Riverdale were expected to combine with others.
Instead of merging, Riverdale School District bought and fixed up an old school building for Riverdale High School. For a while, high school students took buses to Marylhurst University in nearby West Linn, where the district rented space.
New School Buildings
In September 2002, the high school moved into its permanent building. This was an old public school that was renovated and expanded. Later, in November 2008, people in the Riverdale School District voted to approve money to renovate and expand the grade school building. The original grade school was taken down in July 2009 and a new building, designed to look like the old one, was completed in 2010.
