Esporte Clube Vitória is a professional football club from Salvador, Brazil. It was started on May 13, 1899. The team plays in Brazil's top football league, the Campeonato Brasileiro Série A. They also compete in the Campeonato Baiano, which is the main state league in Bahia.

Vitória plays its home games at their own stadium, called Manoel Barradas, also known as Barradão. It can hold over 30,000 fans! The team's main colors are red and black. Their jerseys usually have horizontal stripes. Over the years, the stripes have changed, sometimes being vertical, wide, or narrow.

The club is famous for its youth academy, which is one of the best in the world. Between 1995 and 2000, their young players won more than 21 international titles. Many famous footballers started their careers at Vitória, including Bebeto, Vampeta, Dida, David Luiz, and Hulk.

Vitória's biggest rival is Esporte Clube Bahia. Their matches are called Ba–Vi, which comes from the first two letters of each club's name. This rivalry is known as one of the most intense in the world.

History of Vitória

How the Club Started

The club was founded on May 13, 1899. Two brothers, Artur and Artêmio Valente, along with seventeen other young friends, started it. They learned about football while studying in England. At first, Vitória was a cricket club and was called Club de Cricket Victoria. They chose this name because they all lived in the Vitória neighborhood in Salvador.

First Football Match and New Colors

Vitória played its first football match on May 22, 1901. They played against International Sport Club, a team made up of English sailors, at Campo da Pólvora. Vitória won the game 3–2. A couple of months later, Vitória changed its original colors from black and white to red and black. These are still the club's colors today.

On September 13, 1903, Vitória played its first official match. They beat São Paulo Bahia Football Club 2–0. In 1908, Vitória won its very first title, the Campeonato Baiano. They won it again the next year!

Becoming a Professional Club

From 1910 to 1952, Vitória didn't win many titles because it was still an amateur club. In 1953, the club became professional and won its third Baiano championship. Another team, Bahia, was winning most of the state championships during this time. Vitória won more titles in 1955, 1957, 1964, 1965, 1972, 1980, 1985, and 1989.

Success in the 1990s and 2000s

In 1993, Vitória was the runner-up in Brazil's top league, the 1993 Campeonato Brasileiro Série A. This was a big achievement, especially since they didn't spend a lot of money on players. Vitória became the top club in Bahia, winning the state championship in 1990, 1992, 1995, 1996, 1997, 1999, and 2000. In 1999, they even reached the semi-finals of the Brazilian league.

In the 2000s, Vitória continued its success in the state championship. They won the Campeonato Baiano trophy eight times out of ten years!

Ups and Downs in Leagues

In 2004, Vitória had a tough year and was moved down to the Brazilian Second Division. The next year, 2005, they finished 17th and were moved down again to the Third Division. This was the first time in the club's history they played in the third division.

But Vitória quickly bounced back! In 2006, they finished second in the third division and were promoted back to the second division. In 2007, they finished fourth in the second division and were promoted to the first division. This meant they went from the lowest national division back to the top in just two years!

Intense Rivalry Moment

In February 2018, the rivalry between Vitória and Esporte Clube Bahia made international news. Nine players (four from Bahia and five from Vitória) were given red cards in a state championship match because of how intense the game became.

Club Mascot

Vitória's mascot is a lion named Lelê Leão. The club says his job is to cheer on the fans and players during games.

Team Colors and Kits

Vitória's colors are red and black, which is why they are called "Rubro-Negro" (meaning "red-black" in Portuguese). When the club first started, they wanted to use green and yellow. But it was hard to find materials in those colors. So, they chose white and black instead, which they wore in their very first match. The famous red and black colors were adopted three years later, in 1902.

Many different styles of jerseys have been worn by Vitória's players over the years.
