The Earl of Kinnoull is a special title given to a noble family in Scotland. It's part of the Peerage of Scotland, which is a system of noble ranks. This title was first created in 1633 for a man named George Hay.
Along with the Earl of Kinnoull title, there are other related titles. These include Viscount Dupplin and Lord Hay of Kinfauns, both created in 1627. There's also Baron Hay of Pedwardine, created in 1711. The first two are Scottish titles, while the third is a British title. The title of Viscount Dupplin is often used by the Earl's oldest son, who is next in line to inherit the title.
The Hay Family History
The Hay family has a long and interesting history. They come from a knight named Guillaume de la Haye, who was originally from a region in France called Normandy. He served as a "pincerna" (which means a cup bearer or butler) for Scottish kings like Malcolm IV and William the Lion.
In 1627, King Charles I gave Sir George Hay the noble titles of Lord Hay of Kinfauns and Viscount Dupplin. A few years later, on May 25, 1633, King Charles I made Hay the Earl of Kinnoull.
The Hay family is also related to another noble family, the Earls of Erroll. They share a common ancestor, Gilbert de la Hay, who was the older brother of William de la Hay. William is the ancestor of the Earls of Kinnoull.
In 1711, a powerful politician named Robert Harley, 1st Earl of Oxford and Earl Mortimer helped his son-in-law, Viscount Dupplin, become Baron Hay of Pedwardine. This was a title in the Peerage of Great Britain.
The main home of the Hay family is Dupplin Castle, which is located near Perth, Scotland.
