A Look Back: Earlsdon's History

In the mid-1800s, Earlsdon was a busy place for making watches. Even when the watch industry started to slow down, Earlsdon kept growing. It became part of the city of Coventry in 1890. You can still see a clock on a roundabout at the bottom of the high street. This clock reminds everyone of the area's watch-making past.

Growth and Development

In 1897, a new road called Albany Road opened. This road made it much easier to get to and from Earlsdon. Because of this, more and more homes and buildings were built. By 1918, Earlsdon looked much like it does today.

Today, Earlsdon is a large residential area. Many students and teachers from Coventry University and the University of Warwick live here. This is because Earlsdon is close to the universities. You can find many beautiful old homes in the area.

In August 2006, Earlsdon Street experienced serious flooding after a lot of rain. Many businesses were affected and had to close for a while.

The main part of Earlsdon is often called the "Earlsdon High Street," which is actually Earlsdon Street. This street has many shops, restaurants, and pubs. Around Earlsdon Street, you'll find rows of terraced houses and smaller shops.

Parks and Green Spaces

To the south of Earlsdon is the large and beautiful War Memorial Park. It's a great place to relax and play. To the north, you'll find Hearsall Common, another open green space. On the west side, there's a place called Canley Ford.

Frank Whittle: A Local Hero

Sir Frank Whittle (1907–1996) was a very important person. He helped invent the jet engine! Frank Whittle was born in Earlsdon in a house on Newcombe Road. There's a special plaque on the house to remember him.

Whittle's Early Life

He went to school in Earlsdon. It's said that he was inspired to become an engineer after seeing an aircraft land on Hearsall Common. When he was nine, his family moved to Leamington Spa. His father started an engineering factory there.

Arts and Culture in Earlsdon

Earlsdon has its own theatre, called the Criterion Theatre. They put on many plays each year. They also host other groups and workshops.

Community and Festivals

ECHO (Earlsdon, Chapelfields Hearsall Opinion) is a local community newspaper. It's one of the oldest independent community newspapers in the country. Earlsdon also has an annual "Earlsdon Festival." This fun event takes place on Earlsdon Street during the May Day bank holiday. The yearly Godiva Festival is also held nearby in the War Memorial Park every July.
