East Dallas is a large area in Dallas, Texas, United States. It includes many different communities and neighborhoods. Sometimes, people call it the "Lake & Garden District." This area borders other cities to the east, like Garland and Mesquite.
A very special place in East Dallas is White Rock Lake. It is often called the "crown jewel" of the Dallas parks. The lake and the Dallas Arboretum and Botanical Garden are important landmarks. They help give East Dallas its unique feel.

Where is East Dallas Located?
East Dallas has clear boundaries. To the north, it's bordered by Northwest Highway. On the east, you'll find the cities of Garland and Mesquite. Bruton Road marks the southern edge. To the west, it's bordered by Central Expressway.
East Dallas is next to several other areas. These include Highland Park and Uptown to the west. North Dallas and Lake Highlands are to the north. To the south, it touches South and Southeast Dallas.

East Dallas is quite large. Because of this, its many neighborhoods are often grouped into smaller sections. Here are some of the main sub-areas within East Dallas:
Greater Lakewood and M-Streets Area
This area is west of White Rock Lake. It includes well-known neighborhoods like Lakewood and Greenland Hills. Greenland Hills is also called the M-Streets. Many nearby neighborhoods are often considered part of these larger areas. Skillman Street often divides the Greater M-Street and Greater Lakewood areas.

People Living in East Dallas
In 2016, about 144,008 people lived in East Dallas. The average age of residents was about 35.8 years old.
Most of the people living here were White (65.8%). About 12.7% were Black, and 2.7% were Asian. About 18.8% were from two or more races. A significant portion, 36.6%, were of Hispanic or Latino background.
The population is almost evenly split between males (48.9%) and females (51.1%). Most residents, 74.3%, are 18 years old or older.
The average household income in 2016 was $55,783. This amount was considered above average for both the city and the county. More than half of the homes (56.6%) are single-family houses. The average value of a home owned by its resident was $231,335. About 54.7% of homes are owned, while the rest are rented.
Learning and Education
