East Otto is a small town in New York State. It is located in Cattaraugus County, right on the northern edge of the county. In 2020, about 977 people lived there. The town gets its name from Jacob Otto, who worked for the Holland Land Company. Its neighbor, Otto, is also named after him.

History of East Otto

The town of East Otto was created in 1854. It was formed from the eastern part of the town of Otto. At that time, Otto covered a large area in the north-central part of the county. East Otto was one of the last towns to be formed in Cattaraugus County.

The East Otto Union School was built in 1920. Today, this historic building serves as the town hall. It is listed on the National Register of Historic Places, which means it's an important historical site.

Geography of East Otto

East Otto covers about 104.6 square kilometers (40.4 square miles). Most of this area is land, with a small part being water.

The northern border of the town is marked by Cattaraugus Creek. This creek also forms the border with Erie County.

Several main roads run through East Otto:

  • Cattaraugus County Route 12 goes west towards Otto and north to U.S. Route 219 in Ashford.
  • Cattaraugus County Route 14 (Reed Hill Road) heads south towards Little Valley.
  • Cattaraugus County Route 75 (Plato Road) goes east and southeast to US 219.

These three routes meet up in the main area of East Otto.

  • Plato – A hamlet located at the southern border of the town.
  • Whiteford Hollow – A hamlet located southeast of Brooklyn.
