Eduardo Kingman Riofrío (born February 23, 1913 – died November 27, 1997) was one of Ecuador's most important artists of the 1900s. He was known alongside other famous artists like Oswaldo Guayasamín and Camilo Egas.

About Eduardo Kingman

Eduardo Kingman was born in Loja, Ecuador on February 23, 1913. His father, Edward Kingman, came to Ecuador from Newton, Connecticut in the United States. Eduardo also had a younger brother, Nicolás Kingman Riofrío, who became a journalist.

Eduardo Kingman began his art studies at the School of Fine Arts in Quito. His first teacher there was Victor Mideros. To learn even more, he traveled to other countries like Venezuela, Peru, and Bolivia. He also studied art in the United States at the San Francisco Art Institute from 1945 to 1946.

Many people in the United States first saw Kingman's art in 1939. He helped another artist, Camilo Egas, with paintings for the Ecuadorian display at the 1939 New York World's Fair. This was a big event where countries showed off their cultures.

For 20 years, Eduardo Kingman was a main teacher at the School of Fine Arts in Quito. He also became the Director of the Museo de Arte Colonial de Quito, which is a museum of old art. In 1940, Kingman started his own art gallery in Quito called the Caspicara Gallery.

His original artworks were shown all over the world. You could see his paintings and prints in cities like Paris, Washington, San Francisco, Mexico City, Caracas, and Bogotá. Later in his career, he had a special art show just for his work at the United Nations in New York.

Kingman's art often focused on the lives of Ecuador's native people. He used his paintings, prints, and wood carvings to show their daily life and struggles. He was especially known as "the painter of hands" because he often drew hands in a very powerful way.

Besides being an artist, Kingman was also a writer. He spoke out about social issues, working to make things better for people.

He passed away in Quito in 1997. A few years later, in 2003, two of his paintings were stolen from the Posada de las Artes Kingman Museum. Luckily, they were found and returned safely.
