- Appingedam
- Delfzijl
- Wagenborgen

These towns were once part of the separate municipalities that merged.
How Eemsdelta Was Formed
The creation of Eemsdelta was a big step for the region. It involved several municipalities working together.
Working Together: Werkorganisatie DEAL
Back in 2010, the municipalities of Delfzijl, Eemsmond, Appingedam, and Loppersum started working together. They formed an organization called Werkorganisatie DEAL. This group helped them handle various tasks that municipalities need to do. It was a way for them to share resources and work more efficiently.
The Merger Decision
On November 16, 2017, Delfzijl, Appingedam, and Loppersum officially said they wanted to merge. They approved their final plans on January 2, 2018. The municipality of Eemsmond decided not to join this merger. Instead, Eemsmond chose to merge with other towns like Bedum, De Marne, and Winsum to form Het Hogeland.
In 2019, the Werkorganisatie DEAL group was planned to be dissolved. This was because the new, larger municipalities of Het Hogeland and Eemsdelta were big enough to manage all their tasks on their own. They no longer needed to cooperate in the same way.
Official Approval
The plans for Eemsdelta were officially approved by the House of Representatives on April 22, 2020. The Senate also approved the plans on July 7, 2020. This meant that the new municipality of Eemsdelta would officially start on January 1, 2021.
Choosing the Name Eemsdelta
The name for the new municipality was chosen by the people living there. It was a democratic process.
Voting for a Name
First, almost 800 name ideas were sent in. A special committee then picked their top three choices. They looked for names that were easy to recognize, had historical meaning, and made sense geographically. The three names chosen were Eemsdelta, Fivelgo, and Marenland.
After this, the residents of the municipalities got to vote for their favorite name. More than 16,000 people voted, which was about 42% of the population. Eemsdelta won by a huge majority, getting 67% of the votes.
What Eemsdelta Means
The name Eemsdelta refers to the Eems river. This river flows nearby. The area has also been known as a region called Fivelingo or Fivelgo in the past.
Some people were a bit surprised by the name Eemsdelta. This is because the area around the mouth of the Ems river isn't actually a river delta. A delta is a landform that forms at the mouth of a river, where it flows into an ocean or sea. However, the name was still chosen by the majority of voters.
