Ellingham's Past: A Journey Through Time

The name Ellingham comes from an old language called Old English. It might mean "Ella's home" or "Ella's village." It could also mean "a settlement with lots of eels."

Long ago, during the time of the Roman Empire, people made pottery in Ellingham. Archaeologists have found evidence of about five Roman kilns here. A kiln is a special oven used for baking clay pots. One of these kilns was run by a person named Regalis, who moved to Ellingham from a place called Camulodunum.

In a very old book from 1086 called the Domesday Book, Ellingham is mentioned. It was a settlement with 31 households, which means about 31 families lived there. At that time, the village was part of the lands owned by King William I in East Anglia.

Ellingham Mill was a busy place for a long time. It worked from the 1100s until 1964. The mill would grind crops into flour for baking or food for animals. The old mill building is still standing today. It is waiting for a special plan to help protect it. The company Hovis even owned and ran the mill for a few years in the late 1940s.

During the Second World War, a small concrete shelter called a pillbox was built on the bridge over the River Waveney. This was to help defend the area.
