A Look at Elmsett's Past
The first time Elmsett was written down was in the year 995. It was called Ylmesaeton, which meant "dwellers by the elm trees." By the 1900s, Elmsett had about 16 farms and a mill. Most people in the village worked at these places.
The Tithe Incident of 1932
In 1932, Elmsett became famous across the country. A farmer named Charles Westren, who lived at Elmsett Hall, refused to pay his tithe. A tithe was like a tax, a payment made to the church. Because he refused, some of his belongings were taken from his home.
There is a special memorial across from the church that remembers this event. It says:
1934. To commerate the Tithe seizure at Elmsett Hall of furniture including baby's bed and blankets, herd of dairy cows, eight corn stacks and seed stacks valued at £1200 for tithe valued at £385.
This event was one of many similar protests happening around England at the time. A famous writer named George Orwell even wrote about these events in his book, A Clergyman's Daughter.
Elmsett During World War II
During a big German air raid on the night of May 11-12, 1941, a bomb hit Elmsett. It destroyed some cottages and sadly killed 10 people in the village.
Nature and Buildings Today
Today, Elmsett is home to many listed buildings. These are special buildings that are protected because of their history or architecture. Sadly, most of the village's Elm trees died in the 1960s and 1970s because of a sickness called Dutch Elm Disease.
The area around Elmsett has some beautiful natural spots. Elmsett Park Wood is an area of Ancient Woodland. This means it's a forest that has been around for a very long time. It's also a SSSI, which means it's a protected area because of its special plants, animals, or geology. Other protected ancient woodlands nearby include Borley's Wood, Langham Close Wood, and Lucy Wood.
In 2005, a group called Elmsett Greenlife Grove Scheme (EGGS) created a community wood near the school. This is a place where people can enjoy nature together. There is also a small grass airfield in the western part of the parish.
St Peter's Church
The main church in Elmsett is called St Peter's Church. It is a Grade I listed building, meaning it is a very important historical building.
