History of Elmwood Park
Elmwood Park officially became a village in April 1914. The people living there decided to do this to stop the larger city of Chicago from taking over their area. You can still see a strange "chunk" missing from Elmwood Park's northeast corner. This happened because some landowners voted to join Chicago in 1915.
Around the year 1900, people from the busy city of Chicago would take a train to the west. They would visit a place called "Elm-Wood-Park" for family picnics. This park was a beautiful grove of very old elm trees. A new cemetery was named Elmwood because of these trees. The closest train stop to both the cemetery and the park became known as "Elmwood Park." When the village was created, its founders decided to use this name. The name honors the train stop and the elm tree, which is a native tree in the area.
