Embleton is a charming village and civil parish found in the English county of Northumberland. The civil parish includes the main village of Embleton and a smaller area called Christon Bank, which is about a mile west.

Embleton village has a main street with one shop. There is also a small green with an old village pump. This pump once provided water for the village, but it is not used anymore.

Embleton Bay and Beach

The sandy beach at Embleton Bay is beautiful. It has sand dunes where many different flowers grow. You might see bluebells, cowslips, burnet roses, and bloody cranesbill blooming there.

Dunstanburgh Castle Golf Course

Near the beach, you will find Embleton's 18-hole Dunstanburgh Castle Golf Course. This golf course first opened in 1900 and was updated in 1922. It offers a great place to play golf with sea views.

Christon Bank and Railway

Christon Bank is part of the parish and sits on the East Coast Main Line railway. This railway connects many major cities. Christon Bank used to have its own railway station until 1965.

Nearby Attractions

Just outside the parish, at the southern end of Embleton Bay, stands the impressive Dunstanburgh Castle. This historic castle is a popular landmark. Close by, to the south, is the small fishing village of Craster.

Embleton Tower

Next to the church is Embleton Tower. This is a pele tower, which is a type of fortified house built to protect against raids. Until 1974, it served as the vicarage, which is the home for the local priest.

Creighton Memorial Hall

The Creighton Memorial Hall is a very large village hall. Some people say it is the biggest village hall in Northumberland. It is named after Mandell Creighton. He was the vicar of Embleton from 1875 to 1884. Later, he became the Bishop of London, a very important religious leader.

W. T. Stead Road

One road in Embleton is named after W. T. Stead. He was born in Embleton and became a famous journalist and social campaigner. Sadly, he died when the Titanic sank in 1912.

Historical Church

The Church of the Holy Trinity is a large and important church in the village. It has many interesting features and has historical links with Merton College, Oxford, a famous university college.

Famous People from Embleton

Several notable people were born in or had strong connections to Embleton.

  • Robert de Emeldon (died 1355) was born in Embleton in the 1200s. He became the Lord Treasurer of Ireland and was a personal friend of King Edward III of England.
  • Richard de Emeldon, Robert's cousin, was also born here. He became the mayor of Newcastle upon Tyne five times and was a very important citizen of that city.
  • W. T. Stead was a well-known journalist and social campaigner. He was born in Embleton and is remembered for his work and his tragic death on the Titanic.
