Emery Matthew Moorehead (born March 22, 1954) is a former American football player. He played as a tight end and wide receiver in the National Football League (NFL). His career included time with the New York Giants, Denver Broncos, and the Chicago Bears.
Emery Moorehead is famous for winning a Super Bowl championship. He was the starting tight end for the amazing 1985 Chicago Bears team.
Early Football Days
Emery Moorehead started his football journey in college football at the University of Colorado. For his first two years, he played as a running back. This means he mostly ran with the ball.
Later, he changed his position to wide receiver. A wide receiver catches passes from the quarterback. He was a team captain in 1976 for the Colorado Buffaloes. They won the Big Eight Conference championship that year.
By the end of his college career, Emery had run for 231 yards. He also caught 40 passes for 751 yards and scored six touchdowns. A touchdown is when a player carries or catches the ball into the opponent's end zone, scoring points.
Joining the NFL
Emery Moorehead was chosen in the 1977 NFL draft. The NFL draft is an event where professional football teams pick new players from colleges. He was picked in the sixth round. This means he was the 153rd player chosen overall.
He played a total of 12 seasons in the NFL. During his career, he caught 224 passes for 2,980 yards. He also scored 15 touchdowns. Besides catching passes, he returned 31 kickoffs for 617 yards. He also ran for 114 yards.
Family and Achievements
Emery Moorehead has a son named Aaron Moorehead. Aaron also played professional football as a wide receiver for the Indianapolis Colts. Emery and Aaron made history in the NFL. They are the first father and son to both play in and win Super Bowls!
Emery is also the cousin of Brad Daugherty. Brad was a professional NBA basketball player.
After his football career, Emery Moorehead continued to achieve great things. In 1999, he was honored by being inducted into the Chicagoland Sports Hall of Fame. He later became a director for the Hall of Fame.
He has also been involved with the Boy Scouts of America. Since 1989, he has served on the Board of Directors for the Northeast Illinois Council of Boy Scouts. Emery earned the rank of Eagle Scout in 1969. This is the highest rank a Boy Scout can achieve. In 2012, he received the Distinguished Eagle Scout Award. This award recognizes Eagle Scouts who have achieved national recognition in their careers.
Life After Football
From 1986 until 2013, Emery Moorehead worked as a real estate agent. He helped people buy and sell homes in Northbrook, Illinois. He also served as the Chairman of the North Shore - Barrington Association of realtors.
