Ernetschwil was once a small town, or "municipality," in Switzerland. It was located in the canton of St. Gallen, which is like a state or region in Switzerland. On January 1, 2013, Ernetschwil joined with two other towns, Rieden and Gommiswald, to become part of the larger municipality of Gommiswald.

A Glimpse into Ernetschwil's Past
Ernetschwil is quite old! It was first mentioned in historical records way back in the year 885. Back then, it was called Eidwarteswilare.
Where is Ernetschwil?
Ernetschwil covered an area of about 10.3 square kilometers (about 4 square miles). A big part of this land, about 67%, was used for farming. Another 20% was covered by forests. The rest of the land had buildings and roads, or was made up of rivers and lakes.
The former town was located in a region called See-Gaster. It sat on the southern side of the Ricken Pass, which is a mountain pass. For a long time, during the Middle Ages, Ernetschwil wasn't one big village. Instead, it was made up of many smaller settlements spread out across the area. These included tiny communities like Ernetschwil, Freudwil, Häblingen, Gebertingen, Hof, Ricken, Schümberg, and Schwarzholz.
