Kaltbrunn covers an area of about 18.6 square kilometers (about 7.2 square miles). A large part of this land, about 55.6%, is used for farming. Forests cover another 33.5% of the area. About 7.8% of the land is built up with buildings and roads. The remaining small part, 3.1%, includes rivers or lakes.

The town is in the Linth valley. It includes the main village of Kaltbrunn. There are also smaller villages, called hamlets, in the valley like Fischhausen, Wilen, and Steinenbrücke. On the nearby hills, where fewer people live, you can find the hamlets of Gublen, Chirnen, and Altwies.
