Essert-sous-Champvent used to be a small town, or 'municipality', in Switzerland. It was located in the Jura-Nord Vaudois area of the canton of Vaud. On January 1, 2012, it joined with another town, Villars-sous-Champvent, to become part of the larger town of Champvent.

Geography of Essert-sous-Champvent

Essert-sous-Champvent is nestled in a small valley. It sits between Chamblon hill and the lower parts of the Jura Mountains. The Brinaz river flows right through it.

As of 2009, this former town covered an area of about 1.2 square kilometers (0.46 square miles). Most of this land, about 70%, was used for farming. Nearly 20% was covered by forests. The remaining 11.6% was built-up areas, like buildings and roads.

History of Essert-sous-Champvent

Essert-sous-Champvent was first mentioned in old records way back in 1095. Back then, it was called Exertas.

It used to be part of the Yverdon District. But this district was closed down on August 31, 2006. After that, Essert-sous-Champvent became part of the new Jura-Nord Vaudois district.

Coat of Arms

The coat of arms for Essert-sous-Champvent has a special design. It shows six vertical stripes, alternating silver and blue. On top of these stripes, there are two red tree stumps that are crossed over each other.

Population and People

In 2010, Essert-sous-Champvent had a population of 151 people. About 24.6% of the people living there in 2008 were from other countries. Over ten years, from 1999 to 2009, the population grew by 36%. This growth was partly because more people moved in (18.9%) and partly from more births than deaths (17.1%).

Most people in Essert-sous-Champvent speak French. In 2000, about 71.2% of the population spoke French as their main language. The next most common language was Portuguese, spoken by 21.2% of the people. Italian was third, spoken by 4.5%.

In 2009, the population had a mix of ages. About 12.6% were children aged 0-9 years old. Another 12.6% were teenagers aged 10-19. Adults aged 20-59 made up about 58.2% of the population. Older adults, aged 60 and above, made up about 16.5%.
