Montagny-près-Yverdon is a small town, also called a municipality, in Switzerland. It is located in the Jura-Nord Vaudois area of the canton of Vaud.

History of Montagny-près-Yverdon

Montagny-près-Yverdon was first mentioned a very long time ago, around the years 995-996. Back then, it was known as in villa Montaniaco. Later, in 1397, its name changed to Montaigny-le-Courbe.

The town's history goes back to at least the 12th century. However, the old castle and church from the Middle Ages are no longer standing. The church you see today was built much later, in 1769. Montagny-près-Yverdon used to be on an old Roman road. This road connected the town of Yverdon with Sainte-Croix. Today, the town is located near a modern autoroute.

Geography and Location

Montagny-près-Yverdon covers an area of about 3.5 square kilometers (1.4 square miles). A large part of this land, almost 70%, is used for farming. About 6.5% of the area is covered by forests. The remaining land, about 22.4%, has buildings and roads. A very small part, 0.6%, is made up of rivers or lakes.

Looking closer at the developed areas, about 5.4% are industrial buildings. Homes and other buildings make up 4.8% of the area. Roads and other transport links cover 9.9%. Power and water systems, along with other special developed areas, make up 2.0%. All the forested land in the town is covered with thick forests.

For farming, 56.5% of the land is used for growing crops. Another 8.5% is used for pastures where animals graze. About 4.8% of the land is used for growing fruits or grapes. All the water in the town comes from flowing streams or rivers.

Changes in District Areas

Montagny-près-Yverdon used to be part of the Yverdon District. This district was closed down on August 31, 2006. After that, Montagny-près-Yverdon became part of the new Jura-Nord Vaudois district.

The town's land stretches from the hills around the village. It goes across the Brinaz stream and reaches the banks of the Orbe River.

School System in Vaud

During the 2009/2010 school year, there were 77 students in the Montagny-près-Yverdon school district. In the Vaud canton, children can attend two years of non-required pre-school. The local government helped provide pre-school care for 578 children, and 359 of them received financial help for this care.
