Estill is found in the southern part of South Carolina. It's about 52 miles (84 km) north of Savannah, Georgia. It's also 64 miles (103 km) northwest of Hilton Head Island. If you travel west, Charleston is about 93 miles (150 km) away.

Estill's Past: A Look at Its History

The town of Estill got its start because of railroads. In 1900, a railroad company, later called Seaboard Air Line Railroad, needed a new train line. This line would connect Augusta, Georgia and Savannah, Georgia.

The town was officially created in 1905. It was named after Colonel John Holbrook Estill. Two important historical places in Estill are the John Lawton House and Lawtonville Baptist Church. Both are listed on the National Register of Historic Places. This means they are special buildings protected for their history.

The 2020 Tornado Event

On April 13, 2020, a very strong Tornado hit areas just south of Estill. This tornado was rated as an EF4. It had winds of 175 MPH. The tornado caused a lot of damage and sadly, five people lost their lives. About 60 people were also hurt.

The nearby community of Nixville, South Carolina was hit directly. It felt the worst of the tornado's power. The Federal Correctional Institution, Estill, which is a prison near the town, also got damaged. Because of this, many people staying at the prison had to be moved. They went temporarily to a prison in Lewisburg, Pennsylvania. This tornado was the first very strong tornado in South Carolina since 1995.
