The European ash (scientific name: Fraxinus excelsior) is a common type of ash tree. You can find it all over Europe. It's a deciduous tree, which means it loses its leaves in autumn. These trees can grow very tall, reaching heights of 20 to 35 meters (about 65 to 115 feet).

What Ash Wood is Used For

Ash wood is special because it's very strong but also easy to bend. This makes it a great material for many things.

It has been used to make bows for a long time. People also use ash wood for tennis rackets. Sometimes, the long poles used in the game of snooker are made from it too.

Ash Trees in Old Stories

In Norse mythology, which are old stories from northern Europe, a giant tree called Yggdrasil was believed to be a European ash. This amazing tree was said to connect all nine different worlds. These worlds included places like Niflheim and Asgard.

Below the roots of Yggdrasil lived Hel, a goddess, and the Well of Urd. This well was a very important place in these ancient myths.
