History of Everett
In 1787, a man named Michael Barndollar bought the land where Everett now stands. He planned a town and first called it Waynesburg.
However, most people didn't use the name Waynesburg. In November 1860, this small village officially became a borough and was known as Bloody Run. This name has many interesting stories from the past. But in February 1873, the name was changed to Everett.
The Everett Historic District is a special area in town. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2003. This means it's an important place with historical buildings.
Geography and Location
Everett is in the eastern part of Bedford County. It is located at 40°0′51″N 78°22′24″W / 40.01417°N 78.37333°W. To the south, it borders a small community called Earlston.
The United States Census Bureau says that Everett covers about 1.1 square miles (2.74 square kilometers) of land. There is no water area within the borough limits.
Mountains and Rivers
Everett is in a valley within the Allegheny Mountains. The Raystown Branch of the Juniata River flows through a narrow passage here. This passage is called The Narrows and cuts through Tussey Mountain.
The Alleghenies are part of the larger Appalachian Mountains. They cover parts of central Pennsylvania, western Maryland, and northern West Virginia. The land around Everett has many forests, farms, and small villages.
Roads and Trails
U.S. Route 30 goes around the northern edge of Everett. The older route, called the Lincoln Highway, now passes through the town center as Main Street. This road is also known as US-30 Business.
Interstate 76, also known as the Pennsylvania Turnpike, passes just south of Everett. However, there isn't an exit right in Everett. The closest exits are in Bedford, about 10 miles (16 km) to the west, and Breezewood, about 8 miles (13 km) to the east.
Pennsylvania's longest hiking trail, the Mid State Trail, goes right through the middle of Everett. From there, it continues towards Rainsburg.
