Exploring Exeter's Location
The Exeter CDP is located in the southeastern part of the town of Exeter. It sits on both sides of the Exeter River, right where it flows into the Squamscott River. The Squamscott River is a tidal river, meaning its water level changes with the ocean tides.
Exeter's Borders and Rivers
- To the northeast, Exeter borders the town of Stratham.
- To the east, it's next to New Hampshire Route 101, Dearborn Brook, and New Hampshire Route 88.
- The southern edge of the CDP is marked by a small brook and the Exeter River.
- The western border follows the Pan Am Railways train line and the Little River up to Colcord Pond.
- The northern border is a bit more winding, following streets like Allard Street and Epping Road (New Hampshire Route 27), then going through forests to Oak Street Extension. It continues along Forest Street, Wadleigh Street, Salem Street, another part of the Pan Am Railways line, and Norris Brook. Finally, it reaches the Squamscott River and follows it north to the Stratham town line.
Main Roads and Travel
Several important roads pass through or near Exeter, making it easy to travel to other places:
- New Hampshire Route 101 goes around the northern part of the CDP. You can get onto it from three different exits.
- Route 101 goes east about 4 miles (6 km) to Interstate 95 in Hampton.
- It goes west about 26 miles (42 km) to Interstate 93 in Manchester.
- New Hampshire Route 108 runs right through the middle of the CDP.
- It leads north about 12 miles (19 km) to Durham.
- It leads south about 18 miles (29 km) to Haverhill, Massachusetts.
- New Hampshire Route 27 also goes through the center of Exeter, known as Main Street, Water Street, and High Street. It runs east and west.
- New Hampshire Route 111 starts as Front Street, heading west about 7 miles (11 km) to Kingston. It also goes east with Route 27 for a bit before splitting off towards North Hampton.
- New Hampshire Route 88 heads southeast from the east side of Exeter about 5 miles (8 km) to Hampton Falls.
- New Hampshire Route 85 goes north from the center of the CDP about 4 miles (6 km) to Newfields.
- New Hampshire Route 111A leads west from Exeter about 7 miles (11 km) to Brentwood.
