Falkenberg is a town in Halland County, Sweden. It is the main town of Falkenberg Municipality. In 2019, about 27,813 people lived there.

The town is located where the Ätran river meets the sea. Its name comes from two Swedish words: falk (meaning falcon) and berg (meaning mountain). Falkenberg is a popular place for tourists in the summer. Its main beach is called Skrea strand.

History of Falkenberg

Around the 1200s, the Danish king built a fort on the east side of the Ätran river. This fort eventually gave the town its name. At that time, the area of Halland was part of Denmark. People in the area were known for practicing falconry, which is hunting with trained falcons.

The land north of the Ätran river was sometimes controlled by Norway or Sweden. A market town grew on this side of the river. A church was built there around the year 1300. For a long time, there was even a "New Falkenberg" nearby. The fort was destroyed in 1434 by troops led by Engelbrekt Engelbrektsson. Falkenberg officially became a market town by 1558, which meant it had special rights for trade.

In 1645, Falkenberg and the rest of Halland temporarily became part of Sweden. Then, in 1658, the Treaty of Roskilde made Halland permanently Swedish. For many years, the town worked hard to keep its old trading rights from when it was Danish. Like other towns in the county, Falkenberg slowly started to become industrial in the late 1800s.

In the 1900s, Falkenberg became well-known as a seaside resort. Many people visit to enjoy the coast and beaches.
