History
How It All Began
Farmer Boys was started by the Havadjias brothers in 1981. The Havadjias family came from Cyprus. Before Farmer Boys, the brothers owned other restaurants. They had Astro Burgers in Torrance, California in 1979 and Theodore's Restaurant in Hollywood, California in 1981. Later, they owned McCoy's Restaurant in Perris, California. McCoy's Restaurant became the very first Farmer Boys restaurant in August 1981, after its name was changed.
Growing Bigger
About 16 years after it started, Farmer Boys had grown to eight restaurants. A year later, Farmer Boys was allowed to become a franchise. This meant other people could open their own Farmer Boys restaurants. Soon after, a new Farmer Boys opened in Temecula, California. By 2022, there were more than 100 Farmer Boys restaurants. They were located in Arizona, California, and Nevada.
Special Moments
In February 2020, Farmer Boys briefly changed its name to "Farmer Girls." This was to celebrate Women's History Month and International Women's Day. They even renamed their bacon burger the "Bacon Girl." This change honored the many female staff members who help run the business.
Facing Challenges
In March 2020, the COVID-19 pandemic caused many changes. Farmer Boys temporarily closed its dining rooms. However, customers could still get food through drive-thru, delivery, takeout, and pick-up services.
Expanding Across States
In 2021, Farmer Boys expanded into Arizona. This was the third state where the restaurant operated, after California and Nevada. The first location in Arizona opened in Gilbert, Arizona. In 2022, Joseph Oritz was promoted to president and chief executive operator of the company. By 2024, Farmer Boys had expanded into Colorado. They planned to open locations in cities like Denver, Colorado Springs, Fort Collins, and Pueblo.
