A Look at Farnham's Past
Farnham has a long history. It was even mentioned in the Domesday Book. This was a very important survey of England completed in 1086 by order of William the Conqueror. The Domesday Book listed Farnham as one of the settlements in an area called Clavering hundred.
Farnham Church of England Primary School
Farnham C of E Primary School is a primary school located right on the border between Essex and Hertfordshire. It is only about 3 kilometers (2 miles) from Stansted Mountfitchet and Bishop's Stortford. This means the school welcomes students from both counties.
School History and Size
The school first opened its doors in 1874. Today, Farnham Primary is the smallest school in Essex, with around 50 students in 2023. It has three main classes:
- Willow class: For students from Reception (the first year of school) to Year 1.
- Silver Birch class: For students from Year 2 to Year 4.
- Horse Chestnut class: For students in Year 5 and Year 6.
After finishing primary school, most students from Farnham go on to secondary schools in Bishop's Stortford. The school is in the main admissions area for Joyce Franklin High School.
Working Together with Other Schools
Farnham Primary School works closely with a larger school nearby, Rickling Church of England Primary School. This partnership is called a "federation." Students from Farnham visit Rickling weekly for special activities. These activities help them learn more about art, gardening, drama, yoga, and sports. Both schools share the same main leader, called an executive head, and a deputy head. The deputy head teacher at Farnham teaches the Horse Chestnut class.
School Achievements
Farnham Primary School usually gets very good results in the SATS tests. These tests check what students have learned in different subjects. For example, in 2013, all Year 6 students achieved a good level (Level 4+) in mathematics and reading. Half of them even reached a higher level (Level 5). These results were much better than the national average and better than most schools in the area.
Keeping the School in Farnham
In 2014, there was a big effort to keep the school in Farnham. Essex County Council and the Diocese Board of Education for Chelmsford had suggested moving the school to Stansted Mountfitchet. However, the local councils of Farnham and Stansted, along with the Farnham church, were all against this idea. Because of this strong local support, the school's governors decided not to move the school.
