History of Fatehpur
The history of Fatehpur goes back a very long time, even to the ancient Vedic era. A famous historian, Alexander Cunningham, wrote about places in this district like "Bhitaura" and "Asani". He found old remains from the Vedic period there. It is also believed that the famous Chinese traveler Huen Tsang visited the Asani area of this district.
Ancient Discoveries
In a village called Renh, about 25 kilometers (15 miles) southwest of Fatehpur city, archaeologists found interesting items from around 800 BC. Many old things like coins, bricks, and statues have been found across the area. These items are from the Maurya period, the Kushan period, and the Gupta period. They are very important for understanding ancient history. For example, golden coins from the time of Chandragupta II were found in Bijauli village. The bricks used in the old fort of Asani also date back to the Gupta Period.
Mughal Era and Later
The town of Khajuha, located on the old Mughal road, is also very ancient. It is even mentioned in an old Hindu religious book called "Brahma Purana". It is said that Mahmud Ghaznavi captured Fatehpur during his military campaigns. In 1561 AD, the Mughal emperor Humayun passed through Fatehpur while invading the Jaunpur Sultanate. A big battle happened near Fatehpur on January 5, 1659. Mughal emperor Aurangzeb fought and defeated his brother, Prince Shah Shuja. To celebrate his victory, Aurangzeb built a beautiful garden called "Badshahi Bagh" and a large lodge with 130 rooms.
During the Mughal rule, Fatehpur was controlled by different powers. It was sometimes under Jaunpur, sometimes Delhi, and sometimes Kannauj. In 1801, the East India Company took control of this region. In 1814, Fatehpur was made a sub-division. Later, in 1826, Fatehpur became a district headquarters. The Bawani Imli memorial is a historical site located near Khajuha in Fatehpur.
