Federico Delbonis (born October 5, 1990) is a former professional tennis player from Argentina. He played with his left hand and used a two-handed backhand. Federico was known for his unique serve. He would toss the ball very high and follow through with a big swing.

He reached his highest singles ranking of world No. 33 in May 2016. In doubles, his highest ranking was No. 110 in July 2019. Federico retired from professional tennis in 2024.

Federico's Tennis Journey

Starting Out: 2009–2012

Federico Delbonis became a professional tennis player in 2007. Between 2009 and 2013, he won five titles in smaller tournaments called Challenger and Futures events. These wins helped him gain experience and improve his skills.

In 2011, Federico reached his first major semifinal at the Mercedes Cup in Germany. He won six matches in a row, starting from the qualifying rounds. This was a big step for him, even though he lost in the semifinal.

First Big Final: 2013

In 2013, Federico played in the International German Open. He surprised many by beating top players like Tommy Robredo and Fernando Verdasco. Then, he faced tennis legend Roger Federer. In a thrilling match, Federico won against Federer, which was his biggest victory at the time!

This win sent him to his first-ever ATP Tour final. He played against Fabio Fognini but lost after a very close match. Even though he didn't win the title, his amazing performance helped him enter the top 100 players in the world.

Winning His First Title: 2014

Federico continued to play well. In 2014, he won his first ATP title at the Brasil Open. He beat Paolo Lorenzi in a three-set match. This victory helped him reach a new career-high ranking of No. 44.

The year 2016 was one of Federico's best. He started strong at the 2016 Australian Open, reaching the third round of a major tournament for the first time. He also had a big win at the 2016 Indian Wells Masters, where he defeated world No. 2 Andy Murray. This was his third win against a top 10 player!

Later that year, Federico won his second career title at the 2016 Grand Prix Hassan II in Morocco. He won the entire tournament without losing a single set.

Davis Cup Champion: 2016

One of Federico's most memorable achievements came in 2016 when he helped the Argentine team win the Davis Cup. This is a major international team competition in tennis. In the final match against Croatia, Federico played the deciding rubber (the final match of the tie). He beat Ivo Karlović in straight sets, securing Argentina's first-ever Davis Cup title!

Later Career: 2021–2024

In 2021, Federico continued to show his skills. He reached his first-ever Masters 1000 quarterfinal in Rome. He beat strong players like David Goffin and Félix Auger-Aliassime. This great performance helped him get back into the top 50 rankings.

He also had his best performance at a Grand Slam tournament in 2021. He reached the fourth round of the French Open, which was further than he had ever gone before in a major.

Federico's ranking started to drop in 2022 and 2023. He announced his retirement from professional tennis in January 2024. His last match was a doubles match at the 2024 Argentina Open.
