Fingringhoe is a small village in Essex, England. It's part of the City of Colchester area.

The middle of the village is a special 'conservation area'. This means it's protected because of its history and beauty. You can see a traditional village pond and a classic red telephone box there. The Roman River flows close by and then joins the River Colne.

Its name means 'hill-spur of the Fingringas'. This old tribal name describes people who lived on a 'finger of land'. Fingringhoe is sometimes on lists of unusual place names!

Exploring Fingringhoe's Nature

Fingringhoe Wick Nature Reserve

Fingringhoe is famous for its salt marshes. These are special wet areas where salty water from the sea mixes with fresh water.

These marshes are home to many birds and animals that love salty water. They are part of the Fingringhoe Wick Nature Reserve. The Essex Wildlife Trust looks after this reserve, helping to protect its amazing wildlife.

A Look Back in Time

Ancient Roman Port

About 2,000 years ago, during the 1st Century AD, Fingringhoe was a busy river port. It helped the nearby Roman capital of Britain, which was called Camulodunum (now Colchester).

Big ships would stop in Fingringhoe. Then, their goods were moved onto smaller riverboats. These smaller boats would carry the cargo up the river to Camulodunum. This was important because there wasn't a known road directly connecting Fingringhoe and Colchester back then.

Middle Ages History

A long time ago, a large estate in Fingringhoe was given away. King Henry I of England gave it to a Norman abbey in Rouen, France. This happened during the Middle Ages, a period of history between ancient and modern times.

Fun Facts About Fingringhoe
