A Look Back in Time
Ancient Roman Port
About 2,000 years ago, during the 1st Century AD, Fingringhoe was a busy river port. It helped the nearby Roman capital of Britain, which was called Camulodunum (now Colchester).
Big ships would stop in Fingringhoe. Then, their goods were moved onto smaller riverboats. These smaller boats would carry the cargo up the river to Camulodunum. This was important because there wasn't a known road directly connecting Fingringhoe and Colchester back then.
Middle Ages History
A long time ago, a large estate in Fingringhoe was given away. King Henry I of England gave it to a Norman abbey in Rouen, France. This happened during the Middle Ages, a period of history between ancient and modern times.
