Explore Flagstone Creek's Past

The First Road Over the Mountains

In 1840, people needed a way to travel between the Moreton Bay area (which later became Brisbane) and the Darling Downs. The big mountains of the Great Dividing Range were a huge challenge.

A man named John Sterry Baker had escaped from a prison colony. He lived with the Goomburra Aboriginal people in the Lockyer Valley area. They showed him a secret track over the mountains.

After returning to the prison colony, Baker told Lieutenant Owen Gorman about the track. On October 17, 1840, Gorman and Baker tested the route with a special wagon. They successfully crossed the mountains! Even though Baker showed him the way, the route became known as Gorman's Gap Road.

This route, which connected Upper Flagstone in the west and Flagstone Creek in the east, was marked by cutting notches in trees. It became the very first officially recognized road in Queensland. Today, the road is no longer used and is overgrown. However, you can still follow parts of it. There are three monuments along the route to mark its importance.
