Club Career Highlights
Starting Out in Football
Florian Thauvin was born in Orléans, France. He started playing football in youth teams like Ingre, Saint-Jean-de-la-Ruelle, Orléans, and Grenoble. He quickly showed his talent and moved up through the ranks at Grenoble.
He made his first professional appearance for Grenoble on March 11, 2011. This was in a Ligue 2 match against Vannes, which ended in a 1–1 draw. After Grenoble faced financial issues in July 2011, Florian moved to a new club.
Playing for Bastia
On July 19, 2011, Thauvin signed his first professional contract with Bastia, a team from Corsica. He scored his first goal for Bastia on October 28, 2012, helping them win 3–1 against Bordeaux. He played a key role in Bastia winning the Ligue 2 title in 2012.
In January 2013, Thauvin signed a deal with Lille, another top French club. However, as part of the agreement, he was immediately loaned back to Bastia for six months. This meant he stayed with Bastia until the end of the 2012–13 season. Because of his great performances that season, Florian was named the Ligue 1 Young Player of the Year.
Time with Marseille
On September 3, 2013, Florian Thauvin signed a five-year contract with Marseille. This move happened after a lot of talks, and he joined Marseille for about €15 million. He had not played any games for Lille before moving to Marseille.
In January 2015, Florian was the only Marseille player to miss a penalty in a Coupe de France match. This meant Marseille was knocked out of the competition by his former youth club, Grenoble. He played 81 games for Marseille in two seasons, scoring 15 goals.
Joining Newcastle United
On August 19, 2015, Thauvin moved to Newcastle United in England. He signed a five-year contract. He made his first appearance for Newcastle three days later in a game against Manchester United.
Florian made his first start for Newcastle in a League Cup match on August 25. He scored a goal and helped set up three others in a 4–1 win against Northampton Town. Some people, like famous Newcastle player Alan Shearer, criticized Thauvin for wearing a tuxedo to a game. Florian later said this criticism affected how he played.
Returning to Marseille
On January 31, 2016, Newcastle announced that Thauvin would go back to Marseille on loan for the rest of the season. In his first game back, he was sent off just ten minutes after coming on as a substitute. However, he scored the only goal in a Coupe de France semi-final match, helping Marseille reach the final. They lost the final to Paris Saint-Germain, but Thauvin scored a goal in that game too.
On August 4, 2016, Thauvin started his second loan period at Marseille. Newcastle included a rule that allowed Marseille to buy him permanently later. This deal became permanent in the summer of 2017.

Florian was the captain for Marseille for the first time on January 8, 2017, in a 2016–17 Coupe de France match against Toulouse. Marseille won that game 2–1. On March 10, he scored two goals in a 3–0 win against Angers. He was named the UNFP Player of the Month for March. On April 30, Thauvin scored his first hat-trick (three goals in one game) in a 5–1 win over Caen.
On February 2, 2018, Thauvin scored another hat-trick in a 6–3 home win against Metz. He won two more Player of the Month awards. He finished the 2017–18 Ligue 1 season with 22 goals, which was the second-highest in the league. He was also a candidate for the Player of the Season award. In the UEFA Europa League, he scored four goals. Marseille reached the final but lost to Atlético Madrid.
In the 2018–19 season, Thauvin was the fourth-highest scorer in Ligue 1 with 16 goals. This included another hat-trick in a 3–1 win against Amiens. In September 2019, he was out of action due to an ankle injury. He returned in March, but the season was stopped because of the coronavirus pandemic. On September 13, 2020, Thauvin scored the only goal in a win against Paris Saint-Germain. This was Marseille's first win against them since 2011.
Moving to Tigres UANL
On May 7, 2021, Thauvin signed with Tigres UANL, a team in Mexico. He joined them after his contract with Marseille ended in June 2021. This move reunited him with his former Marseille teammate, André-Pierre Gignac. After playing in the 2020 Tokyo Summer Olympics, he made his debut for Tigres on August 7, 2021. However, he was sent off (given a red card) in the 35th minute of that game.
On January 23, 2023, Tigres announced that they had ended Thauvin's contract. Even though his contract was ended early, Florian was still recognized as a Liga MX champion because his team won the Clausura 2023 tournament.
Playing for Udinese
On January 31, 2023, Thauvin joined Udinese, a club in Italy's Serie A league. He signed a contract for two and a half years.
International Career

Youth Teams
Florian Thauvin played regularly for the French youth national teams. He represented France at the under-18, under-19, under-20, and under-21 levels. He was part of the French squad that won the 2013 FIFA U-20 World Cup in Turkey. He scored a penalty in the quarter-finals against Uzbekistan and two goals in the semi-finals against Ghana.
Senior National Team
Thauvin was first called up to the senior France squad in March 2017 for a World Cup qualifying match. He made his debut for France on June 2, 2017, in a 5–0 friendly win against Paraguay.
He was chosen for the 23-man squad for the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia. France won the tournament, and Thauvin played for one minute in their 4–3 win against Argentina in the last 16.
On June 11, 2019, Thauvin scored his first goal for the senior national team. It was a bicycle kick in a 4–0 away win against Andorra during a UEFA Euro 2020 qualifying match. He had also helped set up another goal earlier in that game.
Thauvin was one of three older players chosen for the French Olympic team for the 2020 tournament in Japan. His new Tigres teammate, André-Pierre Gignac, was also on the team.
Playing Style
In January 2014, The Observer newspaper named Florian Thauvin as one of the ten most promising young players in Europe. His former manager, Alain Casanova, described Thauvin as a player similar to Franck Ribéry. He said Thauvin is "someone who is able to disrupt any opponent, someone very dangerous when he picks up speed." Football writer Andy Brassell called him a "left-footer with fine acceleration and jaw-dropping close control."
