The Frances Lehman Loeb Art Center, often called the Loeb, is a special art museum. It is located on the campus of Vassar College in Poughkeepsie, New York. This museum is a place where students learn about art. It also holds many important artworks and hosts art shows.

The Loeb Art Center started in 1864. Back then, it was known as the Vassar College Art Gallery. It was the first college in the United States to have an art museum as part of its original plan. The museum shows art from ancient times all the way to today. The building you see now is about 36,000 square feet. It was designed by a famous architect named César Pelli. The museum is named after Frances Lehman Loeb, who was a big supporter and a Vassar College graduate from the Class of 1928.

The museum's collection tells the story of art through history. It has over 18,000 pieces. These include paintings, sculptures, drawings, prints, photographs, and even old textiles. There are also glass and ceramic items. A main goal of the collection is to help students learn. It gives them real art to study and helps with their classes. Some important parts of the collection are the Warburg Collection of Old Master prints. There are also many Hudson River School paintings. These were given by Matthew Vassar when the college first opened. The museum also has many works by important European and American artists from the 1900s.

Discovering Art: Special Collections

The Frances Lehman Loeb Art Center has many amazing art collections. Each collection tells a different story about art history.

Hudson River School Paintings

When the museum first opened, its biggest collection was of Hudson River School paintings. These beautiful landscape paintings were given by Matthew Vassar himself. He bought them from Reverend Elias Magoon. This collection, named after Magoon, includes works by famous artists. You can see paintings by Frederic Church, Asher Durand, and Joseph Mallord William Turner.

Warburg Collection of Old Master Prints

The Warburg Collection is full of Old Master prints. These are artworks made by skilled artists from long ago. This collection includes prints by famous artists like Albrecht Dürer and Rembrandt van Rijn. These valuable prints were given to Vassar's collection in 1941 by Felix Warburg.

20th-Century Artworks

One of the strongest parts of the art collection is its 20th-century art. These are works by European and American artists. This group includes important pieces by Pablo Picasso and Balthus. You can also see art from Arthur Dove, Ian Hornak, and Alfred Stieglitz. There are also works by Georgia O'Keeffe, Francis Bacon, and Jackson Pollock. Other artists include Alexander Calder, Nancy Graves, and Marsden Hartley.

Ancient Egyptian Mummy

The museum is also home to an ancient Egyptian mummy. This mummy is of a person named Shepen-Min. He was the son of Pahat. The mummy is kept at the Berkshire Museum but is part of the Loeb's collection.

Hoene Hoy Photography Gallery

In November 2016, the museum opened a new photography gallery. It is on the second floor and is called the Hoene Hoy Photography gallery. It is named after Anne Hoene Hoy, who graduated from Vassar in 1963.
