Francis Bates Pond was born on August 9, 1825. His hometown was Ellisburg, New York, in Jefferson County, New York. He grew up to be a lawyer, a soldier, and a leader in Ohio politics.
Early Life and Education
In 1841, when he was 16, Francis Pond started college. He attended Oberlin College in Oberlin, Ohio. He studied hard and graduated with honors in 1846. After college, he spent three years in Kent, Ohio. For one year, he worked as a teacher. For two years, he was a book-keeper.
In 1850, he moved to Harmar, Ohio. There, he taught classic subjects at the Harmar Academy. While teaching, he also began studying law. He had started his law studies in Cleveland in 1849. He continued them in Marietta in 1850. By 1852, he passed his exams and became a lawyer. He started his law practice in Malta, Ohio. Three years later, he was elected as the Prosecuting Attorney for Morgan County, Ohio. This job meant he was the main lawyer for the county government.
Serving in the Civil War
During the American Civil War, Francis Pond joined the army. He served as a colonel in the 62nd Ohio Infantry. This was a group of soldiers from Ohio. He fought for the Union Army. In August 1864, he was in a battle called the Battle of Deep River. During this battle, he was badly wounded. He lost the sight in his left eye. Because of his injury, he had to leave the army in November of that year.
A Career in Politics
After his time in the army, Francis Pond continued his public service. He became a well-known politician in Ohio.
Ohio House of Representatives
In 1867, he was elected to the Ohio House of Representatives. This is part of the state's law-making body. He represented Morgan County, Ohio. He helped make laws for the state of Ohio.
Ohio Attorney General
Francis Pond was very successful in his political career. In 1869, he was elected as the Ohio Attorney General. He won this election again in 1871. He served as the state's chief legal officer from 1870 to 1874.
Ohio Senate
Later, in 1879, he was elected to the Ohio Senate. This is the other part of Ohio's law-making body. He represented the 14th district. This district included Washington, Morgan, and part of Noble County. He was re-elected to the Senate in 1881.
Later Life and Family
Francis Bates Pond passed away on November 2, 1883. He died at his home in Malta, Ohio. His death was caused by the wound he received in his eye during the Civil War. He had lived with the effects of that injury for 19 years.
Pond was married three times. In 1854, he married Eliza A. Corner. She was from Malta. After she passed away, he married her sister, Emma Corner, in 1867. Emma also passed away a few years later. In 1876, he married Janet Alexander. She was from Washington County, Pennsylvania.
He had children with his first two wives. With Eliza, he had two children: Mary Blanche and George Charles. With Emma, he had a son named Francis Newell. Sadly, Francis Newell died when he was a baby.
