Frederick Low's Early Life

Frederick Low was born in Frankfort, Maine, in 1828. This town is now known as Winterport, Maine. As a young person, he attended the Hampden Academy in Hampden, Maine.

What Frederick Low Did

In 1849, Frederick Low moved to San Francisco, California. There, he started a business in shipping goods. From 1854 to 1861, he worked as a banker in Marysville, California.

Low became a member of the Republican Party. He was elected to the 37th United States Congress. He served in the United States House of Representatives from June 3, 1862, to March 3, 1863.

In 1863, Low was chosen to be the collector for the Port of San Francisco. Soon after, he became the governor of California. He served as governor from December 10, 1863, to December 5, 1867. He was the second California governor to live in the Leland Stanford Mansion State Historic Park. This mansion was the official home and office until the California State Capitol opened in 1869.

Frederick Low was California's last governor during the American Civil War. During his time as governor, two very important things happened. Yosemite National Park was created. Also, the University of California was established. Many people consider Low to be the "father" of the University of California. However, his successor, Henry H. Haight, officially signed the university's charter.

After being governor, Low became the United States Ambassador to China. He served in this important role from 1869 to 1874.

Later Life
